In 1999, an alien spaceship crashes on South Ataria Island and makes the human race aware of other life in space. Ten years later, the ship is reconstructed and christened as the SDF-1 Macross. However, on the day of its maiden voyage, an alien race called the Zentradi make their appearance on Earth—thus beginning Space War I, a UN Spacy/Zentradi war that would change the history of both races forever.

Meek salaryman Johnson discovers that he is in fact the notorious (and reportedly dead) space pirate Cobra, with a new face and altered memories. Embedded in his left arm is Cobra's unique Psychogun, a famous weapon powered by his own will. Having recovered his past, his partner-in-crime Armaroid Lady, and his spaceship, he journeys across the galaxy seeking adventure.

On his travels he will hunt for the galaxy's ultimate weapon, rob museums, break into and out of maximum-security prison, infiltrate a drug ring in the brutal and deadly sport of Rugball, engineer a coup on an alien world, confront the Pirate Guild's most fearsome leaders, and do much else besides—smoking cigars, chasing women and cracking jokes all the while.

This, the 1982–83 Cobra TV anime, adapts the Cobra manga from the beginning, covering the first three major stories and building to a grand conclusion with some shorter one-off tales interspersed along the way. (The 1982 Cobra film has only a loose connection to the TV series—though it involved the same director and some of the same animators.)

Far into the future, a terrible alien menace named Illumidas has conquered Earth. War hero Captain Harlock and his faithful crew are forced to flee into space on their cutting-edge battleship. As they travel the galaxy fighting injustice, Harlock dreams of some day finding Arcadia, a legendary planet where all humans can be free. Along his journey, Harlock is joined by more valiant young people who share his dream of a better future for all humankind. But the Illumidas — assisted by a brilliant human engineer, who will betray even his own kind in the name of revenge — will stop at nothing to halt his voyage. Harlock and his allies are declared pirates, under the code name SSX! This 1982 series from the mind of Leiji Matsumoto acts as a loose prequel to the classic Galaxy Express 999 and Space Pirate Captain Harlock. Reuniting Harlock with old friends while introducing a new and colorful cast, Endless Orbit SSX offers more of the quiet introspection, manly derring-do, and stunningly animated ship-to-ship combat sequences that the Harlock series is known for. Arcadia, take off!

Once Upon a Time... Space differs from the rest of the Once Upon a Time titles in the sense that the series revolve on a dramatic content rather than an educational premise. The series still has a handful of educational information (such as an episode discussing the rings of Planet Saturn).

The series succeeds Once Upon a Time... Man. It reprises almost the entire totality of the characters of the previous series and adapts them into a science-fiction context.

The story tells about the confrontation of many big galactic powers. Among them there is the Omega Confederation, of which Earth is a member of; the military republic of Cassiopée led by the general Le Teigneux; and a powerful supercomputer which controls an army of robots. Once Upon a Time... Space features the adventures of Pierrot (son of colonel Pierre and president Pierrette) and his friend Psi.
